The " At the Heart of Sport" exhibition will be hung at Bare Island La Perouse on Sunday April 8th.
Sport has been an inspiration for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and a way of life for many in our community which is why for Blak Markets second exhibition, artists were given one word to inspire their creativity - Sport !
According to Blak Markets curator, Lyndsay Urquhart, artists have responded in a diverse way to the one word theme that they were given, reaching deep into their belief systems about what sport means to them, and how they could present that artistically.
“The sports which artists are using as their inspiration are as diverse as boxing, rugby league, golf, surfing, cricket, AFL rugby union, soccer, mermaiding and sprinting, from which they have each presented artworks from various vantage points.”
The show will feature artworks from Barbara McGrady, the Blak Douglas, Dennis Golding, Chico Monks, Jenny Shillingsworth, Darren Dunn, Eve E White, Matt Cooley and Leeanne Hunter.
Audiences can expect to see acrylics on canvas, surfboards, cricket bats, boxing bags, photography, etchings and engravings on cricket balls and boxing gloves, acrylics on boxing boots, original artworks designed for the Indigenous Rugby Union, AFL and Rugby League jerseys.
First-Hand Solutions and Curator of the Exhibition - Lyndsay Urquhart wish to acknowledge the Bidgigal people of the Dharawal nation who will host the exhibition, and pay respects to the Elders past, present and future, and the local community of La Perouse.
